AGENCY OVERVIEW

Mission Economic Development Agency (MEDA) - Building on its 46-year history, MEDA is advancing innovative approaches to Latino wealth, place and power building. Rooted in the Mission and focused on San Francisco, MEDA’s mission is to strengthen low- and moderate-income Latino families by promoting economic equity and social justice through asset building and community development. 

MEDA employs an ecosystem approach to economic development that includes direct service programs that serve over 8,000 individuals each year through integrated Financial Capability, Free Tax & ITIN preparation, Business Development, Housing Opportunities, and Workforce Development. This also includes community real estate development and preservation, lending through our Fondo Adelante Community Development Financial Institution (CDFI), organizing and advocacy including our 501c4, and collective impact as the backbone organization of the cradle to career Mission Promise Neighborhood network. MEDA shares its model locally, regionally, and nationally; and, MEDA is currently a funder across California. The creation of this position marks a formal pivot to formalizing MEDA’s regional and national leadership, influence, and coalition.

INITIATIVES OVERVIEW

Reporting to the CEO, the Share the Model Director will drive and lead the vision for the continued growth, enhancement, and investment of MEDA’s regional & national “Sharing the Model”, coalition, & influence initiatives. MEDA shares its models in the interest of equitable resource sharing, best practice exchange, and thought leadership to advance the community development field, with a focus on Latino wealth and power building. Through this work, MEDA is intentional about being an ally, and working in coalition with allies across historically low-income and immigrant communities, and communities of color.


In 2015, MEDA launched its ¡Viva! integrated services training and technical assistance model. This comprehensive package, grounded in Human Centered Design, is coupled with MEDA’s expert staff for one-on-one organizational engagements, national network consulting, and regional best practice exchange convenings across California. MEDA has shared this model with over 30 asset building organizations across California, and the National Association of Latino Community Asset Builders (NALCAB) and UnidosUS national networks. MEDA is both funded for and funds this work, passing through funds to organizations committed to utilizing Financial Capability as a key strategy for wealth and power building.


In 2018, MEDA launched its “Nuestra Casa” Sharing the Model work to provide training, technical assistance, and consulting to other affordable housing developers seeking to launch or enhance real estate acquisition preservation programs in their communities. MEDA is the leader in Small Sites acquisition and development in San Francisco. MEDA has approximately 1200 units of affordable housing in their management and construction portfolio. MEDA is now also providing pass-through funding to these developer partners.


MEDA expects to expand its Sharing the Model service offerings into other areas. Potential examples include: equitable CDFI investment and lending, organizational health functions (HR, Finance, Development), collective impact networks, 501c4 formation and activation, and Evaluation. The Share the Model Director is expected to work across all of these teams to coordinate execution, including delivering services themselves.


POSITION DESCRIPTION

Ambassadorship

  • Champion MEDA’s theory of change locally, regionally, and nationally. This includes, but is not limited to: speaking engagements, committee and Board membership, and thought leadership publications.
  • Work closely with the CEO and MEDA teams to lead and position, MEDA’s regional and national profile.
  • Advocate for MEDA’s priorities across various stakeholder communities, including but not limited to: Latino and immigrant community members, government, philanthropy, and partner organizations
  • Lead ongoing development of MEDA’s racial and economic equity perspective, including internal initiatives and external coalition and alliances across communities of color, and immigrant and historically low-income communities.


Business Development & Fundraising

  • Work closely with Development and MEDA Management team on annual business & fundraising planning and execution
  • Secure buy-in and funding investment from diverse funding pool: private, foundation, government, fee-for-service
  • Ensure maximum quality and marketability of MEDA’s product & service offerings, including continuous evaluation and enhancement
  • Lead design, creation, and distribution of new Sharing the Model packages, as determined in conjunction with the CEO, other MEDA teams, and market demand.


Technical Project Management

  • Oversee procurement, funding, and training & technical assistance contract processes
  • Ensure all contracted engagements are executed successfully, including tapping subject matter experts and/or directly carrying out any required roles and responsibilities
  • Create and executive grant processes, from RFP creation to award(s)
  • Deliver training and technical assistance plans and services to grantee and partner organizations
  • Develop, package, and share curriculum, training, & technical assistance offerings across MEDA service areas
  • Ensure staffing and role/responsibility coordination across MEDA teams
  • Design, planning, and execution of MEDA hosted convenings & other events
  • Collect, track, and report qualitative and quantitative data for program evaluation and other business needs.


Staff Supervision

  • Develop and executive staffing, business, and fundraising plans to build out high performing team
  • Directly supervise Sharing the Model staff to ensure successful initiative execution
  • Assess necessary staffing model, and create team as needed and budget allows
  • Contract and coordinate related partners and consultants


SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS

Skills: 

  • Strategic, visionary leadership and management skills, with a focus on equity, community impact, accountability and achieving results; 
  • Program development and evaluation, including the development, systems and tools for service integration and/or program implementation;
  • Proven, demonstrated experience with successful relationship and fund development;
  • Expertise in two or more of MEDA’s core services areas;
  • Proven, demonstrated ability to ground theoretical frameworks in technical applicability, and gain understanding and buy-in across multiple audiences;
  • Project management, including the ability to successfully balance multiple projects at once, achieving desired outcomes and maintaining accountability of the various parties involved in any given project;
  • Excellent writing & communication skills;
  • Progress-oriented coaching and reciprocal feedback skills;
  • Ability to support consistent performance appraisal, recognition and improvement plans, and conflict resolution across teams and internal & external stakeholders;
  • Emotional intelligence and interpersonal skills that allow for the development of positive working relationships while maintaining strong supervision and accountability; 
  • Experience and knowledge of Results Based Accountability (RBA) methodology a plus.


Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience; Master’s degree in nonprofit management, public policy, business, sociology, or a related area a plus;
  • Excellent, demonstrated management skills with a track record of successfully leading teams to successful results and impact;
  • In-depth knowledge and experience with community informed program design and service delivery, knowledge of Human Centered Design a plus;
  • Excellent knowledge of nonprofit finance, human resources, resource development, asset building strategies, and research & analysis;
  • Strong fundraising and advocacy background with various stakeholders: community partners, local government, and funders;
  • 7 years’ experience in staff supervision;
  • 7 years’ experience in large volume program design & management;
  • Strong organizational, analytical, and strategic decision-making skills;
  • Previous experience as an Executive-level leader in a non-profit environment required;
  • Able to foster a strong team environment, intra and inter-departmentally;
  • Experience living & working with communities of color, immigrant and historically low-income communities;
  • Commitment to championing MEDA’s mission and programs, specifically Latino wealth & building;
  • Bilingual in Spanish required.
